Someone left a tomato plant on the station wall this morning with a note asking us to keep it alive, and it is now the most supervised plant in the district. Firefighting is long stretches of nothing and then everything at once, and the nothing is where the cooking happens, feeding a crew who complain loudly about the food and finish the pan anyway.

My balcony is more garden than balcony at this point, and the tomato has already been promised a corner of it. Gardening is the only quiet thing I do. Dancing is the release, badly, mostly by the stove with the extractor fan running. Open to what comes, no particular plan. Years later the thing that stays with me is never a face, it is how somebody treated the person who could do nothing at all for them.
