Standing in my kitchen with soup still on the heat and my hands warm from the wraps I only just unwound. Martial arts is the work, mostly kids during the day, and nothing beats the moment one of them stops asking whether they can do it and simply does it. Cooking is how I come down afterwards, vegetables cut in the same steady rhythm I move in on the mat.

If there is anything left in me after that, the guitar comes out and I chase one phrase around until I fall asleep on the couch and the lamp burns all night. Anyone can drag me to karaoke, I am not good and it has never stopped me. I live alone, window open most nights, and I have never once felt lonely in this room.
