Anyone who works a shift beside me writes me down as cold within the hour, and I stopped correcting it because correcting it takes longer than letting it stand. Medicine rewards a flat voice, and after enough years of delivering bad news steadily, the flat voice follows you home. The garden is where it comes off, tomatoes and one stubborn lemon tree and dirt under the nails that I scrub out before every shift.

Singing happens only while the water is running and never in front of another person. Two people have caught me at it and both had the sense not to mention it afterwards. Photographs I take constantly and show to nobody, mostly hands, mostly out of focus. I ask a great deal of myself and almost nothing of anyone else, which sounds generous and is closer to a way of never being disappointed.
