Replying to anything that is not urgent takes me days and I have no defence for it. On the stand I am the opposite, watching a hundred people at once and knowing which one is about to get into trouble before they do. Nobody wants the lifeguard who is relaxed about his phone to also be relaxed about the water, so I keep those two very separate.

After a shift the ink comes out, one character repeated until the shape is right. Books stack up on the floor because the shelf lost that argument years ago, and the ones about the sky get read twice. What I leave unsaid is the part where I notice everything, including the mood you walked in with. Saying it out loud tends to make people self conscious, so I just adjust.
