Every six weeks or so I leave a place I have only just started to like, and I have never once got comfortable with that. Photographing places for a living sounds like freedom and is mostly waiting, in bad weather, for light that may not turn up at all that day. The twenty minutes after it does arrive are worth all of it, when the work goes quiet and the shutter does the talking.

Wherever I stay long enough I plant something, which is either optimism or a bad habit, since I am rarely there when it comes up. Books are the only weight I carry without complaint. Everything else in the bag has been thrown out and replaced twice. Single, and content enough with that. One photograph never gets shown to anybody, and the reason for it stays with me too.
