Something nobody at the station knows is that I cook for the whole shift on Sundays and pretend it is leftovers. Police work is mostly waiting, paperwork, and the twenty minutes a week that undo the sleep of the other hundred and sixty. Cooking is how I put myself back together, slow things, one pot, nothing that needs an audience.

Water in the early hours before anyone else has arrived at the pool, lengths and more lengths until the noise in my head gives up. Then a game late at night that I take far too seriously for a grown man, and I would defend that if pushed. Single, and honestly not in a hurry about it.
