Turpentine and cold coffee, which is what the corner of my flat smells like from about six in the evening onwards. Teaching takes the rest of it, thirty of them at once, and the ones who go quiet at the back are the ones I watch hardest. Patience is not a virtue in that job, it is equipment.

Yoga in the morning keeps my shoulders from carrying the whole timetable, and painting is where the day gets put down somewhere it cannot follow me. Weekends the camera goes out with me for things that refuse to sit still. The flat is mine alone and much louder than you would think, radio on from morning to night. The one thing I keep back is what I actually wanted to do before I ended up in a classroom, and I do not explain that to anyone.
