Never once have I remembered to water the plants in my own flat, which is a genuinely embarrassing admission for a florist to make. The shop ones are immaculate, every single one of them. The ones at home survive on luck and the occasional guilty flood. Arranging flowers for strangers all day has made me sentimental in a way I would deny under direct questioning.

Calligraphy is the evening discipline, one clean stroke or begin again, no negotiating with it whatsoever. Baking is the messy opposite and my kitchen shows the evidence.
