Bread matters more to me than the booking calendar does, and I have turned down a decent set because a dough was at the wrong stage. Playing to a full room is still the best feeling I know, hundreds of people agreeing on one thing for four hours. Then it is four in the morning, ears ringing, and I am proving loaves in a quiet kitchen like a completely different man.

Guitar happens when the flat is empty and nobody is going to ask me to play something. Books go everywhere with me because green rooms are mostly waiting. What I give away easily is time, effort, a lift home, the last of anything. What stays with me is whatever sits underneath all that, and it takes a lot longer than one night.
